What writers say about "12 Secrets"

"When I attended your class I bought Twelve Secrets for Writing Compelling Fiction. What a wonderful treasure of a book!  I've read it twice already and I'm certain I'll be able to apply the information to my writing. Thank you for everything." - Nikki Kimbel

"Twelve Secrets is a must read for writers at all levels of experience.
Schartz has distilled the essence of the writing process and served it up in palatable bite-sized portions.  her expertise is shared in a fresh, readable format, and she fearlessly tackles everything from trite expressions to "ness" monsters.  The tidbits she presents are easy to digest and satisfying, and any reader will come away entertained and refreshed, ready to approach his or her writing with a new zest." - Jeanette F. Chaplin, College Writing Instructor, author of the Flower of the Field mystery series.

"After writing a chapter, I consult 12 Secrets to make sure I got it right." Michael Murphy, award-winning author of "Class of 68" and the Casey Bannister mystery series.

"Vijaya Schartz has become my mentor.  I read and re-read 12 Secrets all the time.  I had to order another copy, the first one got wet in the shower." Michael Jett, award-winning author of SECRET GAMES, a military novel of political intrigue.

Just a bite to whet your appetite (or not!)

A few lines from chapter 12 - Compelling, dynamic Style:

Positive statements make for stronger writing than negative ones.  Instead of "She didn't like Pumpkin soup," you can write "She hated pumpkin soup," but you can do better.  "The very smell of pumpkin soup made her want to heave."  You reinforced the statement by using a sensory detail (smell) and you painted a lasting picture in the reader's mind with an active verb (heave).
